steel framed structures

Architects house, Bloemfontein

When I decided to design my own house I was free to question existing construction methods and critically consider conventional ideas regarding building cost.

This project was used as an experiment in alternative construction and lead to a variety of similar projects, all utilizing the knowledge gained.

The site is located in an agricultural setting and a primary goal was that the building should reflect its surroundings as a re-imaging shed structure.

The floor area of the project is 200m² and was completed in December 2010. The building was completed at a rate of R3000/m² at a time when conventional construction could not be done for less than R5000/m².

The building utilizes all the key construction guidelines as listed in the introduction and we aim to have the building functioning independently from municipal services by the end of 2014.
