steel framed structures

house Liedjiesbos, Bloemfontein

Liedjiesbos guest house is a Bloemfontein institution and so it was a great pleasure and privilege to be involved in designing a residential extension for Dawie and Henning.

The home is intimate in scale largely due to the fact that it forms a private retreat to the main guesthouse.

The design of the home utilizes the typical grid layout of the steel structure. The walls however, freed from carrying the roof structure, follows a completely different order inspired by African architecture with flowing, circular spaces.

The building is designed around climatic and environmental themes. Separated roof structures hide’s solar heating panels while creating nesting platforms for owls and bats in the external structure.

Concrete roof portions allow for roof gardens and passive air cooling forms part of this experimental residence.

The building is currently under construction and due to its experimental nature; use of alternative materials and extreme focus on detailing will only be completed by the end of the year.
